Alterna is a soy phytochemical composition specially developed by Danor for the prevention and ameliorate problems associated with menopausal syndromes, osteoporosis and other maladies as a natural alternative to Hormone (Estrogen) Replacement Therapy (HRT)

Alterna capsules contain 400 mg of soy phytochemicals extract that provide 25 mg of soy isoflavones, plant estrogens that act both as estrogens and estrogen antagonists. Together with the total soy phytochemicals soy saponins, Bowman-Birk trypsin and chymotrypsin inhibitor (BBI), soy peptides and peptones, crude lipid material, including phospholipids, soy phytosterols (campesterol, stigmasterol, beta-sitosterol), phenolic Acids (chlorogenic acid, ferulic acid, gentisic acid, isochlorogenic acid, p-coumaric acid, salicylic acid, syringic acid, vanillic acid and cinnamic acid), soy anthocyanins, phytates, etc., much in the same way as present in the native soybeans.

Alterna, in contrast to most "isoflavones" and "phytoestrogens" pills or tablets available at the market place is composed not only of a desired amount of isoflavones but contains all the other highly beneficial phytochemicals of the soybean. Alterna is in essence a natural food product made from an aqueous alcoholic extract of the soybean. This extract is a natural and very highly concentrated extract of all the soy phytochemicals in the same form and quality as present in the original soybean with the exception that it does not contain the soy storage proteins, oil and fiber. Alterna comprises of soy constituents that are considered extremely beneficial for the maintenance of good health.

Alterna also contains soy sugars, of which about half are the Bifidobacteria growth promoting oligosugars: stachyose and raffinose. These oligosugars serve as carrier of the above mentioned soy phytochemical constituents.

Alterna is virtually free of the major "inert" soy components, such as the soybean storage proteins (including the soy antigenic protein constituents "2S", glycinin and beta-conglycinin), the soybean oil, the soybean polysaccharides and the soybean fiber material.

Alterna components are considered useful to prevent and aid miscellaneous female ailments such as menopausal syndromes osteoporosis, hip fractures, hot flashes, breast, colon, lung, and other divers types of carcinogenesis, heart diseases, etc.

Alterna components carry antioxidants that have cholesterol-lowering effects and boost the immune system. The benign effects of the combining constituents of the soy phytochemicals for the prevention and amelioration of various diverse pathological conditions are well documented in the literature.

The saponins, Bowman-Birk trypsin and chymotrypsin inhibitor (BBI), phytates and phenolic acids constituents of Alterna are considered as having a prime responsibility for the anti-cancer properties alongside with the isoflavones. The combined soy phytochemicals in Alterna have apparently a very favorable synergetic effect, acting as estrogen antagonists and as anti-androgens, reducing the proliferation of cells and having anti-oxidant, anti-microbial, anti-fungus and anti-viral activities. The soy phytochemicals are apparently able to block inflammatory responses, act as signal interceptor and thus able to meliorate conditions resulting from aberrations in signaling pathways.

HRT answers many women's needs HRT is not for everyone
Relieves symptoms caused by estrogen deficiency including:
     Vasomotor disturbances
     Genital atrophy
Reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by 40-50% based on clinical studies.
Protects against postmenopausal osteoporosis.
Vasomotor symptoms affect 75% of postmenopausal women.
About 20-30% of postmenopausal women seek help.
Women are discouraged from treatment due to:
     Fear of cancer risks
     Desire to stop menstruation
     Contraindications to HTR
     Dislike of drugs
Women today request dietary and natural options for symptom management

Phytoestrogens are compounds from vegetal sources, similar in their chemical structure and their biological activity to estrogen. One of the main groups of phytoestrogens is the isoflavones group, containing Genistein and Diadsein, which can be found mostly in soy and its products.

Plant-derived phytoestrogens (PE):

  • Include isoflavones which structurally resemble estradiol(E2)
  • Bind to estrogen receptors and possess both estrogenic and antiestrogenic effects.
  • Appear to stimulate sex hormone binding globulin SHBG.
  • May play an important role in modifying the frequency of post-menopausal symptoms.

These populations consume PE-rich diets of approximately 40 mg isoflavones/day.

145 women with climacteric complaints were assigned to a phytoestrogen rich diet or control group in Hadassah Hospital study.
12 week supplementation with a PE rich diet resulted in:
Significant reductions in hot flushes and vaginal dryness scores.
Significantly increased serum levels of SHBG, an indicator of estrogenic response.

Soy contains the estrogenically potent isoflavonoid phytoestrogens, diadzen and genisten.
Studies find that soy products can reduce hot flushes by 40-45% within 3 month.

    In a 3-month placebo controlled-study of 104 post-menopausal women:

60g daily of soy protein isolate significantly reduces the mean number of hot flushes
    per 24 hour period.

A significant treatment difference in favor of soy is evident after 15 days and
continues during the 12 week study.

After 3 months of treatment, women taking soy had a 45% reduction in daily
    hot flushes
    vs. 30% of placebo-treated patients.

Scores expressed as percentage. Difference between soy and placebo was significant after week 2, with the exception of week 8.

    Estrogen alters serum lipid levels

Helps to reduce the risk of cardivascular disease by decreasing LDL cholesterol and increasing HDL cholesterol.

    Phytoestrogens behave like estrogens

Act as an estrogen agonist in postmenopausal women and may offer cardioprotective effects similar to estrogen.

In a recent meta-analysis of 38 clinical trials, an average of 47g/day of soy protein was associated with significant reductions in serum lipoprotein concentration.
"Dietary soy phytoestrogens may provide cardioprotective benefits via a direct effect on lipids"

A pure soy extract containing a natural concentrated source of phytoestrogens.

Each capsule provides 400 mg of soy extract, yielding about 20 mg of the estrogenically potent isoflavones, genistein and diadzein.

The recommended dosage is 2 capsules daily.

Capsules are a convenient way to supplement a woman's phytoestrogen intake.
